- "I've been in this mercenary business only a short while, but I'll tell you a small truth about life in the galaxy. In the Outer Rim, you can disappear and not even the Empire can find you. You pay a few credits and get your identity changed---and that of your family---and your identichip changed as well. Then, after your family collects killed in action pay from the Empire on your line of duty death, you rocket off to the Outer Rim in a brand new shinny star ship and start a new life."
- ―Jason Lasso discussing with Doc how to disappear
Upon completing medical school, Doctor Cook volunteered to serve in the Republic Medical Corps during the Clone Wars. During the Battle of Coruscant, the Republic warship, he was serving on, was hit by Confederate fire and severly damaged. The medical bay was destroyed causing Cook to lose several patients, nurses, fellow doctors, and other crew members. He also sustained severe injuries among them were a severed left hand and torn apart rib cage.
His injuries were repaired with a prostetic hand and cloned internal organs, but he was still medically discharged from the Republic forces. He found work on Kuat at a hospital in one of the major cities. There he stayed until the Rebel Alliance attacked the Kuati shipyards.
Commander Russel Cook was pressed into service with the Imperial Surgical Corps through the Imperial Military Stop Loss Order at the age of 55. His Imperial 'recruiter' claimed that Cook's medical discharge was "misfiled paperwork during the stresses of the Clone Wars." His first assignment was a Coruscant military hospital and then he was re-assigned to the Victory-class Star Destroyer Red Death. He was slated to be shipped off to an Imperial-class Star Destroyer patrolling the Expansion Region until the Red Death came under attack by the MERCs over Desert Planet 22-52A.
During the battle he ended up with Jason Lasso and Winterkill onboard an Imperial Lambda-class shuttle as the Red Death broke apart. Lasso suggested that the MERCs would be able to assist Cook in starting a new life, with his family, in the Outer Rim by faking his death. Cook, however, offered his skills to them and became the Cheif Medical Officer on the Johnny Boy. Cook also revealed that the MERCs were the most wanted people in the galaxy, aside from the leader of the Rebel Alliance.Imperial Intelligence and the Imperial Security Bureau had most wanted alerts out for them in the civilian sector, along with notices on all Imperial military posts, complete with profiles on each and every Merc member and their families.
